Summary

The practice of medicine in the modern era is blessed with the growth of medical knowledge, medical reach, and the advent of technology and financial inclusion.

A lot has been done, and a lot more needs to be done.

Communities across cultures and societies face unprecedented challenges that manifest as increasing disparitiesamong the needs of patients, the availability of resources, the increasing dependency on market forces, the growth of cutting-edge technology, and the attempt by care providers to solve these issues in isolation.

Ideas, innovations, inclusive approaches, regulations, and technologies exist, and they need to be knitted together to solve these challenges successfully. A bridge, a medium, an enabler is needed to consolidate, inter-connect, and infuse these into the patient and care provider communities.

Human dimensions of healthcare are fundamental to compassionate, ethical, and safe care.

Principles

To enable this, we believe in the following ‘Principles:

  • Patient Welfare and Patient Relationship

    • The principle of patient welfare keeps the patient central to all aspects of care planning, care delivery, and post-care delivery. Given the vulnerability of patients, based on their social, cultural, economic, and educational status, there needs to be a balance maintained with the market forces, societal pressures, regulatory and administrative directives, and technology solutions.

  • Patient Autonomy and Patient Dialog

    • Irrespective of the patient’s social, economic, educational, and cultural status, care delivery must empower the patient and their families to make an informed decision about themselves. The decisions made by the care provider along with the patient should be in keeping with ethical practice and not lead to inappropriate care.

  • Patient Confidentiality

    • While delivering care, the confidentiality of patient information needs to be strictly maintained and this commitment extends to discussions with persons acting on a patient’s behalf when obtaining the patient’s own consent is not feasible.

  • Commitment to Scientific Knowledge

    • The application of scientific knowledge and technology, must be based on integrity, and the care providers have a duty to uphold scientific standards, promote research, and create new knowledge and ensure its appropriate use. The profession is responsible for the integrity of this knowledge, which is based on scientific evidence and physician experience.

  • Professional Competence

    • To keep abreast of the latest medical knowledge, techniques and care delivery models is essential for all care providers.  The whole care-provider community and the ecosystem must endeavor to achieve equitable dissemination of skills, knowledge, and capabilities among the care-provider community. An equitable distribution of healthcare resources is essential. There should be no discrimination based on race, gender, economic status, social status, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or lack of awareness.

This Charter is intended to ensconce the above-mentioned principles and to promote an action agenda for ‘a bridge’, ‘a medium’, ‘an enabler’ to consolidate, inter-connect, and infuse these ideas, innovations, inclusive approaches, regulations, and technologies into the patient and care provider communities.
